About Us
The Fraternity's History
Sigma Alpha Iota was founded on June 12, 1903 at the University School of music in Ann Harbor, Michigan by Elizabeth Campbell, Francis Caspari, Minnie Davis Sherrill, Lelia Farlin Laughlin, Nora Crane Hunt, Georgina Potts, and Mary Storrs Anderson. They wanted to create an organization that promotes interaction between those that share a love for music.
Our Chapter's History
Louisiana State University's chapter of Sigma Alpha Iota, Sigma Phi, was founded in Baton Rouge, Louisiana on November 6, 1926. It is the oldest chapter in the state of Louisiana. At the time of Sigma Phi's founding, Hazel E. Richey was the National President and Christine Penn was the National Vice President. Sigma Phi currently has 13 active members and continues to add to that number each year. 84 years after its foundation, the members of Sigma Phi continue to uphold the ideals upon which SAI was founded; they are dedicated to music performance at LSU and the enhancement of the music programs in the Baton Rouge Community.
Thinking About Joining?
We are so glad you are interested in SAI. All female LSU students who have a sincere interest in music, at least a 2.75 GPA, and have already taken a music class at LSU are eligible to join our sisterhood. The recruitment process for the spring semester is just beginning, and we are looking for a new bunch of girls to come enjoy music with us. Because we are a service-oriented fraternity, SAI sponsors several philanthropies projects in the Baton Rouge community:

The recruitment process for the spring semester is just beginning, and we are looking for a new bunch of girls to come enjoy music with us. Because we are a service-oriented fraternity, SAI sponsors several philanthropies projects in the Baton Rouge community:
- Through our Wishing Well Project, we provide music, instruments and other materials to band, choir and orchestra programs in East Baton Rouge Parish.
- Several times each semester, our members visit nursing homes in the Baton Rouge area and brighten the residents’ day with our music.
This year, our chapter has 10 amazing and dedicated officers and chairwomen. To meet them, and the rest of our lovely sisters, you can check out our members page.
